The Wizard of Oz, a pivotal character in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz (and adapted from the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz), is portrayed as a powerful and enigmatic figure ruling over the Emerald City.
Initially presented as an awe-inspiring entity represented by a giant, disembodied head, billowing smoke, and booming voice, the Wizard cultivates an image of invincibility and omniscience to maintain order in his kingdom. He tasks Dorothy and her companions with the seemingly impossible mission of killing the Wicked Witch of the West in exchange for granting their wishes.
The climax reveals him to be a fraud: Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmanuel Ambroise Diggs (shortened to Oz), a traveling salesman from Omaha, Nebraska. He arrived in Oz via a hot air balloon and used stage tricks and technology to project a false persona. Despite his deception, Oz possesses genuine kindness and resourcefulness. He ultimately helps Dorothy and her friends realize that the power to fulfill their desires resided within them all along. He then attempts to return to Kansas via another balloon, but becomes stranded, leaving the future of the Emerald City uncertain.
